Easy Ways to Save Energy in Your Home

Picture
Here are some easy and effective ways to save energy in your home, no major renovations needed:

Heating & Cooling
  • Set your thermostat wisely: Lower it in winter (68°F or lower) and raise it in summer (78°F or higher).
  • Use a programmable thermostat: Automatically adjusts temperature when you're asleep or away.
  • Seal drafts: Use weatherstripping or caulk around doors and windows.

Lighting
  • Switch to LED bulbs: Use at least 75% less energy and last 25x longer than incandescent.
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room.
  • Use natural light during the day when possible.

Appliances & Electronics
  • Unplug unused devices or use a power strip to cut "phantom" energy use.
  • Use energy-efficient appliances: Look for the ENERGY STAR® label.
  • Wash clothes in cold water and air dry when possible.

Water Heating
  • Lower your water heater temperature to 120°F.
  • Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators to use less hot water.
  • Fix leaky faucets, especially hot water taps.

Everyday Habits
  • Run full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine.
  • Close blinds/curtains in summer to block heat; open them in winter for warmth.
  • Use ceiling fans to circulate air (they use less energy than AC).
